Zoja Skubis: Massachusetts college student killed in Ukraine

A Massachusetts woman was among the victims killed in a Russian missile attack on a Ukrainian military base over the weekend.

Zoja Skubis, 24, was a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and had been serving in the Ukrainian military for several months as a medic.

The university said Skubis had been studying remotely since March and was "dedicated to helping others and had a passion for social justice and human rights."

Skubis's family and friends said she was passionate about helping others and dreamed of becoming a nurse.

"She was a bright, beautiful, and compassionate young woman who had her whole life ahead of her," her family said in a statement. "We are heartbroken and devastated by her loss."

Skubis is the second American to be killed in the war in Ukraine.

The first was journalist Brent Renaud, who was killed in March.
