Sochi Airport Closed After Plane Incident

Sochi International Airport has been closed after an aircraft overran the runway and became stuck in the mud on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. The airport is expected to reopen soon, according to a statement from the airport's press service.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. local time when a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, operated by Rossiya Airlines, was landing at the airport. The aircraft is said to have veered off the runway and gotten stuck in the mud.

There were no reported injuries among the 169 passengers and crew on board. The passengers were evacuated from the aircraft and taken to the airport terminal.

The airport has been closed while crews work to remove the aircraft from the runway. The airport is expected to reopen later today, but passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest information.

Chief of police of Adler district detained

The chief of police of Adler district of Sochi, Alexei Snegirev, was detained on suspicion of receiving a bribe of 4 million rubles ($55,000) from a local businessman.

According to the investigation, Snegirev received the bribe in exchange for providing protection to the businessman’s illegal activities.

Snegirev has been charged with taking a bribe on a large scale. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The investigation is ongoing.
