What is Hurricane Helene?

Hurricane Helene is the eighth named storm and the third hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season. Helene formed from a tropical wave that emerged from Africa on September 12th.

By September 14th, the wave had already begun to show signs of organization. It became a tropical depression six days later on September 20th, and then a tropical storm the next day on September 21st.

On September 23rd, Helene was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane. As of the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Helene was a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph and a central pressure of 973 mb.

Hurricane Helene's Expected Path

As of 11 AM AST on September 24th, Hurricane Helene was located about 820 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. Helene is expected to turn towards the west-northwest today, and then toward the northwest on Monday, September 25th.

The NHC's latest forecast track has Helene passing well to the southeast of Bermuda on Monday, September 25th, and then continuing on toward the north-northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 26th and 27th.

Helene could potentially impact Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in Canada late this week or early next weekend.
